Mr. Chong Ah Yew’s Story

I’m Chong Ah Yew, 72 years old, from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. I married Madam Liew Yau Mooi and we have 5 children. Four years ago,  I was diagnosed with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and in December 2022, I was confirmed to have prostate cancer. I consulted a urologist Dr Fam Xeng Inn for my treatment.

Dr Fam was recommended to me by my son-in-law, who had a friend whose father underwent a robotic prostatectomy performed by him in Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City. Dr Fam recommended robotic surgery to remove my prostate because of my co-morbidities, which included high blood pressure, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, chronic kidney failure (CKD), and a previous cardiac angioplasty and hernia surgery. With this surgery, recovery from robotic surgery will definitely be faster for me due to smaller incisions, less bleeding and less pain. I accepted Dr Fam’s recommendation and underwent robotic prostatectomy surgery in February 2023.

I’m very impressed with the recovery. I could walk on Day 2 and was discharged on Day 5. I was able to go on brisk walks for exercise after being discharged and started driving again on Week 4. It was a pleasant stay at Sunway Medical Centre. Nursing care is superb and Dr Fam is very professional.

Madam Liew Yau Mooi’s Story

I’m Madam Liew Yau Mooi, 69 years old, the spouse of Mr. Chong Ah Yew. I had kidney stones and underwent extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) and surgery to remove the stone, but there were still residuals. Due to the stone, my ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) had narrowed and surgery was required.

I consulted with Dr Fam, the same consultant who was treating my husband. I decided to go for robotic surgery because of the impressive recovery my husband experienced. Seeing is believing. Robotic surgery was recommended as this surgery required many sutures to reconstruct the UPJ.

I underwent robotic pyeloplasty on the 8th of Aug 2023 and experienced the same recovery process as my husband. I am very grateful for the nursing care provided at Sunway Medical Centre, as well as for Dr Fam, who has skilful hands for surgery despite his young age. I will certainly recommend Dr Fam, robotic surgery and Sunway Medical Centre to my relatives and friends who may require treatment in future.
